Tomato Fest!!!

By 24 August 2017

Taste ALL the farmers tomatoes this week and vote for your favorite! Who will win the BEST 2017 OC Market tomato?? So many of these sun-ripened and locally grown summer delights are fabulous and if there’s a tie there might be more than one winning fruit.  Market tomatoes are a world apart from the supermarket varieties which are bred to be picked green, gassed and put on a truck. Taste the ones at the Market and you’ll never enjoy a thick-skinned, bland, mealy, grocery store “tomato” ever again! So many ‘maters that the farmers grow have stories, come from different parts of the world and have been passed down through the generations. The gals at Coyote Ridge Farm will even have an info sheet about their tomatoes! Many of these market fruits come from organic seeds, or at the very least, open-pollinated, sometimes their own saved heirloom seed.  Ask the farmers about their varieties……you’ll discover new ones and never go back to the store-bought kind! We’ll announce the winner/s right here next week and on our Facebook Page. Enjoy the tomato-tasting…and remember leave them on the counter and not in fridge!

Back this week is Olympia Provisions, Pam’s Pickled Products, Romero’s Salsa, Delice Confections, Second Son Kimbap’s hot Korean food, JK Goats, TMK Creamery and Pitkin Winterrowd Farm, who has checked in the say the fava beans are ready! Yes It’s a big market this week. With another round of hot weather coming pick up some cuts of pastured meat for the BBQ and …just in from Wild Oregon…Robin will have the best prices of the season on salmon, plus she’ll have tuna, sole, rock fish, crab, prawns, shrimp and clams.
