Moon Munchies and Pickling Time!!
Well it’s almost here and whether you are staying home or packing up to camp on a mountain….there will be plenty of ideas for the ‘Moon Munchies and Eclipse Party’ food at the Market…it’s the peak of harvest right now and we have so many good things to choose from! Kiyokawa Orchards are sending Red Haven certified Organic peaches, plus the first Gravenstein apples and more cherries. Corn will be in abundance, plus heirloom tomatoes, fresh basil, eggplant, beautiful crisp sweet onions, padron peppers (that are so easy fry in olive oil for a quick appetizer) and plenty of beets and cucumbers. Birkeland Farm, Campfire Farm and Fisher Ridge Farm have pastured meats for the grill including chicken pieces, brats and other sausages, plus ground pork, lamb and beef……and don’t forget the bacon from Shy Ann Meats for the celebratory Eclipse Breakfast! Wild Oregon is back and bringing Chinook and Steelhead Salmon, Ling Cod Petrale Sole and Tuna, as well as other seafood. Crusty breads and sweet pastries available this week from La Provence Bakery, Grano Bread and Bakery and Sweet Chaos. Vivacity Spirits, Eastside Distillery, Forest Edge Vineyard and Kings Raven Winery have a great selection of ‘adult’ beverages….create an Eclipse Cocktail!
The OSU Master Food Preservers are coming so bring your questions! They will demystify the art of preserving for you and give lots of encouragement. Shopping in your own pantry once fall and winter comes is so gratifying! They will be setting up tables of samples to taste (kimchi and quick pickles) and have recipe ideas and resource books for you to look at. Get fired up to preserve the amazing bounty our local farmland has to offer…don’t let another season pass you by! NW Ferments are back , check out their starter kits and cultures , they can help you too. https://nwferments.com/ View OSU Extension’s remaining classes here : http://extension.oregonstate.edu/clackamas/food-safety
Maggy’s Farm is bringing 4″ winter veggie starts plus gallons of herbs and perennials. Now is the time to plant fall and winter veggies. Ask for advice if you are new to this season in the garden, don’t waste garden space when you could have a good crop of kale, chard, spinach, lettuce and more during the colder weather. Back too is Utopia Woodworking with their Adirondack chairs, including their ‘wine’ chairs, perfect for eclipse-viewing! Out this week is Second Son Kimbap (back next week) …so hot food is down to Sara’s Tamales, but don’t forget The Hummus Stop has pita, many varieties of hummus and several salads and Grano Breads have savory scones and other treats. Gone too is Double Jump Coffee (back next week)…so you have been warned about your cup of joe:)
Other things going on this week: The POP Club kids (it’s free to join for ages 5-12yrs) are making quesadillas in the Market Kitchen with chef Amy, starting at 9.45am.
