Minestrone Soup….and box sales!

By 7 September 2017

With the heat of late subsiding it’s time to turn attention to easy, nutritious, fall meals. Using the beautiful market veggies and Birkeland Farm’s excellent bone broth, watch Chef Amy work her magic in the Market Kitchen at 10 am. Minestrone soup isn’t just for Italians! Saturday it will be made with fresh (not canned) heirloom market tomatoes, fresh herbs, even a pepper or two! The simple recipe is here: http://foodhero.org/recipes/minestrone-soup

Watch as Chef Amy cooks (starting at 10am or just stop by to get a taste and a recipe…till 1pm

Have the SNAP card? Sign up at the Info Booth by 9.15am, walk the market with a nutritionist, meet the farmers (know your farmer know your food!), watch the demo, get a taste and a recipe and receive $5 in market incentive tokens. Purchase market tokens with your SNAP card and we match up to $10! Yes you can access up to $15 free this Saturday with your SNAP Card. It’s a great week to be at the Market:)

Don’t forget…Grano Bakery is now back at the Market every week!

Master Food Preservers will be at the Market next week, making Salsa, but YOU can get a jump on preserving this week.  Sun Love Farm will be selling 10 lb flats of heirloom tomatoes for $20.  As far as tomato preservation goes, heirlooms are juicier and tastier than sauce tomatoes, which are dryer (so they make sauce more quickly) but with less flavor. Melissa’s selling 20 lb boxes of sauce tomatoes for $30. Plus she has a varietal called “Principe Borghese” which makes the best dried tomatoes. Those will be $25 for a 10 lb flat. Munch on dried tomatoes for a healthy winter snack, or reconstitute in hot water and add to pizzas, quiches or chop and add to olive oil, dried oregano, garlic and feta, serve on crusty bread. Maryhill Fruit Company are selling flats of freestone peaches for $25 too. Want more to buy in bulk? Ask your farmer!

Maggy’s Farm is back with plants this week (all Certified Naturally Grown), back too is Olympia Provisions and Vivacity Spirits. Clackamas County’s Resource Conservation & Solid Waste office will be letting you know how to waste less food and make green cleaners! Metro’s coming to  talk to neighbors and land owners about a project to help clean up contaminated properties in the area…. and playing in the music booth is Free Range! Classic country, bluegrass and original tunes, easy listening!

Roast a chicken…it will be cooler! And pick up some bone broth and pickles from Birkeland Farms!

And back to an old chant…VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED!!!  We heard this week that our long time helpers can no longer set up and take down the Market….YIKES!!! If YOU love the Market and want to see it continue….please give us a hand. Need not be every Saturday, but you must be able to lift at least 25lbs and move fast (we set up a LOT of stuff!). Please call 503 734-0192 for details if you think you can help, even for a few hours a month. If you know of any young folk who would like a letter of recommendation from us, this might be a good gig for them. Hey….it’s excercise you don’t have to pay for at the gym, plus we’re a fun bunch AND you get the pick of the Market, before it opens! Thank you…our customers are the best!!

Our wonderful farmers and growers!

Farmers have had a tough time this year. First snow and ice, then too much rain to plant , then cold spring temperatures, then the heat and drought and now the smoke. Thankfully none in our market are in harms way with the fires. However the growers and ranchers have been impacted recently by working outside in the heat and awful smoke this past week. Best way to support them is to show up and buy from them, a simple thank you too, will go a long way. Meanwhile we keep those firefighters on the front lines and all who have been affected and displaced in our thoughts.

NEXT SATURDAY!!!!!
