Flowers, plants are here…and Volunteers are needed!

By 30 March 2017

It’s no April Fools joke, we may get a dry market this week! And it’s beginning to look like Spring.  Lee’s Gardens are bringing tons of daffodils and the very first tulips. Treat yourself and someone else too, take home a fresh flower bouquet and brighten up the home after all this rain. Maggy’s Farm will have starts of spring’s major food groups in abundance this week….Strawberry and Rhubarb plants. The rhubarb plants are second-year crowns ready to produce.  Five kinds of Strawberry starts represent both June-bearing (Honeoye and Cavendish) and Day-neutral (Albion and Quinault) varieties. Scarlet is a June type also but is pure WHITE (!) inside and bright red outside. Different is good! $3 each, 4 for $10 or buy a flat of 18 for $38 . Oh, there’ll be a bunch of other fun plants too. While you’re thinking about waking up the garden, don’t forget to bring your tools to be sharpened this week!

3 'winter' markets left, April, 1st, 15th and 29th. Main Season opens May 6th!

30 farmers and vendors Saturday: RJ farms are bringing carrots, plenty of greens, onions, baby beets, radishes, potatoes, and loads of pastured hens eggs. Wild Oregon Seafood will be featuring freshly-made Razor Clam Chowder and delicious Crab Cakes, along with fresh Dover Sole, Mussels and the usual winter oceanic assortment. Back in the Market is Sara’s Tamales, Granny Fi’s shortbread and Ole World Oils (camelina oil is wonderful and nutritious for cooking, use it topically on the skin also!). Stone Barn Brandy Works is back too…you can sample their amazing fruit liqueurs as well as Eastside Distilling products (their Coffee Rum is perfect in hot drinks, or poured over ice cream!). Out this week is La Provence Bakery, Spindles and Fiber and Cafe de Crepe, all back on the April 15th. Grano Bakery is shooting to be back in May, meanwhile visit them at their store, 15th and Washington.

20160123_100421Visiting Forest Edge Winery this past month was a real eye-opener. Their slogan “Working with Nature Making Extraordinary Everyday Wine” hints at the permaculture practices they have followed for many years. Although not certified Organic, their vineyards and orchards are maintained using strict organic practices, plus they re-use their oak barrels, re-cycle their rainwater for irrigation, source cork from sustainable forests and print their labels using soy ink on recycled paper. As for their wines….well come and taste them for yourself this weekend! Check them out here: http://forestedgevineyard.com/

Oregon City Farmers Market rocks…. we all know that, but now you can come and search for painted rocks at the Market! A group of dedicated and talented local artists are now bringing and hiding (in plain sight) multiple rocks around the site each market day. If you find one you can either keep it or re-hide it (anywhere) BUT make sure you post a pic of it to their site:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/OregonCityRocks/ and to our Facebook page too: https://www.facebook.com/ocfarmersmarket/

20160109_112033VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!!! As we draw closer to the opening of the main summer market (May 6th) we are  putting the call out for volunteers to help set up and take down the market and for help at the Information Booth. The only prerequisites are that you can lift at least 35 lbs, love the market and have a sense of humor…we have fun! Even a few hours a month would help us, it takes approx. 12-15 volunteers have the market running smoothly each market day. Call 503 734-0192 or email marketmanager@orcityfarmersmarket.com, we’d love to hear from you!!
