It’s February already! Can’t you just feel Spring approaching with the bulbs pushing up already? The Winter Market continues right on into spring….on 8th St at Main, 10am -2pm, every other weekend (3 markets in March- Seed and Plant Swap March 29th) through April. In May our main market starts in the Red Soils Campus on the “hill”. Get a Market Schedule at the Info Booth.

…..And , even though it’s winter , we have an abundance of goods MADE, BAKED, OR GROWN right here in the local community from 28 vendors this weekend ! Thanks to our growers who practice season-extension techniques, we have a variety of produce even in the depths of winter. Coming this Saturday Feb 1st we have  : Greens (Kale, Chard, Spinach ), Broccoli, Carrots, Leeks, Potatoes, Onions….and for fresh green salads, Arugula, Mizuna and Radishes.

From Pitkin-Winterrowd Farms we’ll have Clackamas County home-grown garlic. (This spicy garlic has large cloves that split easily and have wonderful flavor) It’s getting close to the last of the Winter Squash but this weekend Tom will still have the heavenly Delicata and Thelma Sanders Sweet Potato. Slice in half, take out seeds , chop into cubes , drizzle olive oil and roast on high for 40 mins…yummy! Find GOURDS this week as well—-Farm grown gourds for bowls and birdhouses. (Nice winter project? End of season special $5.00 each or 4/$15.00.) Plenty of farm-fresh eggs too this Saturday.  Kiyokawa Orchards are sending a variety of good flavorful eating apples and pears from Parkdale……and will have a special on Honey Crisp for juicing/pies!

Plan for locally crafted snacks for this Sunday (if you are a fan). Super Bowl Parties aren’t Super Bowl Parties without Chips and Salsa or Buffalo Chicken Enchilada Dip! This Saturday Green Card Salsa are introducing a Salsa Negra, 7 Deadly Sins, a seriously hot concoction of seven different fire-roasted peppers, as well as a new sauce, En’ch Yo Mama’s Enchilada! The Hummus Stop will have plenty of different flavors and salads for healthy snacking on. Sweet Home Farms will have a special on their Jerky, Pepperoni and on all sausages. In addition Daniel will have all the meats…goat, pork, lamb and beef,.,..with a special on ground beef . He will have whole chickens too 3.5lb -4.5 lbs..great ideas for using the whole chicken here: http://matronofhusbandry.wordpress.com/2014/01/28/make-chicken-work-for-you/  Shy Ann Meats will have the usual fab. bacon with many flavors to choose from, plus smoked pork chops and sausages too.

Fresh seafood Saturday will include beautiful Rockfish which landed yesterday, the very popular organic Steelhead, Steamer and Razor clams and probably crab.  The freezer holds Albacore Tuna, and likely some other goodies too.  Wild Oregon will have 4 flavors of  Oregon Marinated Anchovies [Boquerones], stop by and try some (these are nothing like the super-salty ones in cans)…they would be great with a salad of arugula ( Blossom Vinegars fruit vinegars in the dressing!) and crusty bread ..so good for you too!

For sweet treats, BigFoot Bread will be bringing new Fruit Breads – Blueberry Crumble, Apple Cinnamon Crumble and Banana Cinnamon. They are locally-made right here in OC with real fruit local and from scratch.  The regular breads include the new Honey White with a Hint of Rye – the newest in the line of Toasting Breads. Check out Greg’s new Cinnamon Roll – Apple Cinnamon with homemade Caramel Sauce, and lastly,  challah breads now come with poppy seeds – great for serving for dinner, or with fondue or as french toast. Baked goods from La Provence Bakery will  include all their Europen-style crusty breads and pastries. Happy Flower have tiny cup-cakes….for the game snack table perhaps?

In addition we’ll have mushrooms, roasted nuts, coffee, cider, preserves, jams and relishes, kombucha, dog treats, caramels, goats milk soap and lotions, wood and fiber products…and more.

Out in the Garden Nursery will have a selection of hellebores, ferns, twiggy dogwoods, dwarf nandina, yucca (new this week) and cut curly willow (two kinds), pussy willow, and twiggy dogwoods (yellow, orange, and red)….yup spring is on it’s way!

Eats of Eden are selling cups of soup and sandwiches now as well as their delicious Kombucha (growlers available ) …and BBQ is BACK!!! Cattle Drive is a Santa Maria Style Barbecue, a traditional way of cooking over an open Oak Pit. Steve uses only seasoned Red Oak firewood to provide the unique rich smoke flavor. The barbecued Beef Tri-Tip is seasoned to perfection with dry rub, then grilled to medium rare, and sliced thin for juiciness and tenderness. Grab a sandwich this Saturday while you listen to Silkie Mayer…one of the most popular music acts at the Market last summer! Bound to attract a crowd…so get your seat early…he starts playing at 10.30am-1.30pm.

Debit and SNAP cards are welcome, with a $5 Match for the SNAP card…thanks to the Rotary Club Foundation of Oregon City! The Kid’s POP (Power Of Produce!) Club gives $2 in wooden tokens to each kid (5-12yrs) to shop for fresh produce…and coming next month…food plants:) Stop and say Hi to us at the Info Booth….supporting the Market and the small family farmers  is so important , we all thank you!!! The market accepts cash, debit, EBT (SNAP) and P-EBT cards. WIC and Senior Farm Direct checks are accepted by all produce vendors and expire on Nov 30th each year. Stop by our information booth for information.
