Bean Season is here!

By 27 July 2017

Multiple varieties of beans are now in season at the Market, and lovely tender, just-picked fresh beans make wonderful salads and side dishes! For 11 different recipe ideas Real Simple has you covered:https://www.realsimple.com/food-recipes/recipe-collections-favorites/popular-ingredients/green-bean-recipes/greenbeanswithbaconvinaigrette. For seasonings see the good people at Culture Aromatics and Spice Pilgrim, they are sure to have ideas too.  Sun Love Farms will have green and purple beans, plus the beautiful Dragons Tongue, which Melissa says is best eaten fresh. May’s Flowers and Produce will have the little Haricot Vert, delicious sauteed lightly with a tiny bit of sesame seed oil and garlic. Pretty much all the farmers will have beans on their tables but if you prefer to have yours pickled, Pam’s Pickled Products started back at the Market last week, with her famous Dilly Beans, and Bloody Mary Beans. Chef Amy is making Rosemary Chicken Kebabs with Sweet & Sour Orange Dipping Sauce, bet you’ll find a few beans mixed in with the other veggies! Watch, taste and get a recipe starting at 10am. Market Kitchen recipes can be found on our web site (under the Programs tab) : https://orcityfarmersmarket.com/market-kitchen/, we’ll be adding more recipes this weekend.

Last week for Kiyokawa Orchard’s Pie Cherries!

Tomatoes are just appearing. Brown Bottle Farm will have Stupice, Latah and Matina varieties and RJ Farms has Stupice too, along with the “must cook every night” Padron peppers. Early shoppers will get their pick! This is the last week for Kiyokawa Orchards amazingly-colored tart Pie Cherries, they will continue with the sweet red cherries for a couple more weeks. Maryhill Fruit Company is sending peaches, nectarines, pluots (plum/apricot cross) melons and corn……and we still have plenty of berries!

For those craving carbs what a treat this week holds. Grano Bakery is back at the Market! After ‘suffering’ through their tremendous success opening their 1st bakery on 15th and Washington (and winning OC’s Best Bakery award), then having to gear up with more staff, then a burnt-out oven (that had to be replaced…. from Italy!), they are finally ready to take on the market again, be sure to welcome them back:) La Provence Bakery, Delice Confections, South Barlow Pretzels and Diana’s Delight’s all have baked goods too.

Eatin’ a green bean and riding in style!

62 canopies going up this week, a full and luscious market! We are happy to announce we have a working debit machine again and can swipe both Debit and SNAP cards (with a $10 SNAP Match!). However most vendors take debit for purchases, but if they don’t please see us at the Information Booth , we can sell you wooden market tokens that do not expire…and they make great gifts with one of our new, bright green, insulated shopping bags! Back at the Market and playing  soulful R & B is Manuel ‘Silky’ Meyer….real warm weather music from 10am-1.30pm. Pick up some food and drink and sit back and enjoy the summer tunes. LIKE us on Facebook and tell us what you bought at the Market!
