2015 …the year of eating REAL food!

IMG_2309Happy New Year to all our wonderful supportive customers! We’re excited to kick off our 10th year (wow wee) of operating in Oregon City…yup, can you believe it?? Find us this Saturday January 10th (and every-other Saturday for the Winter Market, through April) on 8th St at Main, 10am-2pm….28 vendors, hot food, live music…this week by Big Yellow Taxi..don’t miss the show!

Make 2015 the year of  “real” foods! Eating local whole food during this season is easy as we have good mix of vendors at the Winter Market ….let their products inspire you! Now’s the time for soups, stews and casseroles (using meats , root veggies, and wild mushrooms… foraged in the Cascades). Pitkin Winterrowd Farms will have delicious Sweet Dumpling Winter Squash Squash on Saturday for the great price of 2 for $1.00. Roast in oven for one half hour @ 350 degrees.Cut center out and stuff with fruit (raisins, apples or pears)for additional 20 minutes at 350 degrees or until done. Makes a great side dish with roast meats.

It’s also time to taste that fresh Oregon Dungeness Crab (cooked the day before the market),  Crab Cakes, Dover Sole, Red Rock…even a piece of Steelhead from Wild Oregon.  Take home just-picked winter baby greens (from Caldwell Family Farms) make a crisp salad , plus we’ll have plenty of apples and pears to add to it and/or for those pies and cobblers, and don’t forget a sip of local wine! Eat seasonally and you’ll never get bored 🙂

Come to the market with an empty bag, let the market foods inspire you. Get to know your farmer this year, ask them for cooking tips or recipes and go home with full bag and ideas for a healthy meals!

Mid-winter veggies this weekend will include: Spinach, Cabbage, Chinese Cabbage, Pac Choy (stir-fry!), Broccoli, Kale, Arugula, Winter Salad Mix, Kohlrabi, Turnips, Winter Squash, Onions, Potatoes, Radishes.                   Plus we’ll have plenty of farm-fresh Hens and Duck Eggs, wild Mushrooms, Pastured Meats, Nut Butters, freshly-made Salsas, Jams and Chutneys, Relishes, Pickled Products, Baked Goods, Hummus and Pita, Wines…and add some crunch to your new year with 4 kinds of Granola from Portlandia Granola. Also local whole Milk, Yoghurt and Egg Nog (why egg nog still? ..well you haven’t tried it yet..obvio!) all from Flying Cow Farm in Oregon City..find it all at Caldwell Family Farms booth. FYI:  Coffee at the next Market, Jan 24th.

Find Dog Treats, Wood Products, Soaps and Lotions too…it’ll be a couple more months before we get the plant starts coming in…but what a great thought:)

The market accepts cash, debit, EBT (SNAP) and P-EBT cards. WIC and Senior Farm Direct checks are accepted by all produce vendors and expire on Nov 30th each year. Stop by our information booth for information.
