Taste something different this week!
With Fall now in the air the products are changing on the farmers tables! The beauty of shopping at a farmers market is not only the freshness and connection to who grows the food, but also in witnessing the seasons changing! Find us the next 4 Saturdays, 9am-2pm. Then we close for one weekend and open for the Winter Season on Saturday Nov. 7th at 10am-2pm. Our Market site year-round is on the parking lot at 2051, Kaen Rd, off Beavercreek Rd. Plenty of close parking too!
Caldwell Family Farm are selling loads of weeds, Purslane to be exact, and customers are coming back for more! This old folk-lore remedy for many ailments is somewhat crunchy and has a slight lemony taste. Some people liken it to watercress or spinach, and it can substitute for spinach in many recipes. Young, raw leaves and stems are tender and are good in salads and sandwiches. They can also be lightly steamed or stir-fried. Purslane’s high level of pectin (known to lower cholesterol) thickens soups and stews. Best thing is that is packed with Omega 3 fatty acids and Vit E and you can throw it in pesto with basil to lessen the amount of oil you use. The farm is also growing huge black radishes (white inside) that were planted since Medieval times in Europe simply because they’re hardy nutrition in trying climates and times of year. They, like many root vegetables, store exceptionally well throughout the winter. Peeled and cut up into chunks they can be tossed in oil and roasted or shredded raw with apple and carrots in a salad.
48 vendors this Saturday. Some vendors have left the Market as their season has ended and some are still joining us , and will do so throughout the winter months. Buttercraft is back with lovely infused grass-fed butters, both savory and sweet. A new item is smoked maple…oh my! You have to get a taste of that for your pancakes and bacon! Reverend Nat’s Hard Cider is also back. Not only great for drinking but also for use in cooking…last week Chef Deborah used just a drop of hard cider to cook down her spicy apple chutney. Pick up a recipe for this condiment at the Info Booth.
Wild Mushrooms and Bacon….in a risotto yum! Come and see Chef Amy prepare this dish, taste it in the Market Kitchen and pick up a recipe too. Natures Wild Harvest is very happy for these cooler, damper conditions and is out foraging the Cascades for all kinds of earthy delights! Bill also has dried mushroom powders, local honey, wild fruit syrups and jams. There’s always something interesting each week through the fall the winter at the booth.
It’s BIKE TO Market Day! Ride your bike or drive the kids bikes on Saturday and the Green Corps Fresh Start Bike Repair Program will check brakes and make safety adjustments for you. The kids can ride through an obstacle course and receive prizes too!
Stonewood Rustics are back, as is Azura Artwear and Spindle and Fibers. Don’t forget your knives and garden tools, Sir Sharp-A-Lot has only 4 more more market days with us this year. We’re sampling all the different varieties of apples again this week…Kiyokawa Orchards Tsugura apple won the taste test last week. See which one you love the most this weekend. Grab a slice of hot pizza, a cup of freshly roasted coffee and enjoy the live music. It may be cooler but the Market still looks lovely and has plenty to offer. Take home something different this weekend and get creative!
Next week is the Kids Cider Pressing Day….rain or shine the kids make cider and we serve it hot!
By the way we ended up #1 on Oregon and 27th in the US in America Farmland Trust’s Market Celebration poll…so a BIG thanks to all who voted, now come and get your No Farms No Food sticker!
And thanks for your support of small family farms:)
