Marching Towards Spring

By 5 March 2026

We’re marching towards spring at the market.

It’s a month of in-between winter roots still anchoring our tables while the first tender greens and early blossoms hint at what’s coming. It’s a time when farmers are juggling two seasons at once harvesting the last of their storage crops while tending trays of seedlings under grow lights and in warm greenhouses. And it’s a time when our community shows up with that unmistakable spring energy: ready for fresh flavors, ready for color.

March brings a mix of hearty winter staples and the earliest spring arrivals.

•     Overwintered greens — kale, chard, collards, and the first spinach of the year
•     Root vegetables — carrots, beets, parsnips, potatoes, radishes, turnips, rutabaga
•     Brassicas — cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts
•     Alliums — onions, shallots, garlic, and green garlic as it begins to appear
•     Mushrooms — oyster, shiitake, lion’s mane, and seasonal wild varieties
•     Early herbs — parsley, cilantro, chives, and mint
•     Local proteins & pantry staples — eggs, pasture‑raised meats, beans, grains, honey, jams, and fresh breads
These transitional weeks are perfect for soups that lean brighter, salads that lean heartier, and meals that bridge winter comfort with spring freshness.

We spoke too soon! In our last newsletter we shared that Kiyokawa Family Orchard’s last market of the season was Feb 21st. OOPS! We are happy to report they will be here for all of March and possibly the first week of April. Thank you to all who stocked up at our last market day. We’re happy to report their apples, pears and cider are still available.

Find us this Saturday, March 7th, from 10am-2pm at Clackamas Community College’s GREEN LOT 1 here in Oregon City.

See you at the market!

Farmers Preparing for the Season

Behind the scenes, growers are already deep into spring prep. Seed trays are filling greenhouses, irrigation lines are being checked, and fields are being amended for early planting. Many of our farmers are experimenting with season extension—low tunnels, row covers, and protected beds—to bring you earlier greens and more resilient harvests throughout the year.

This is also the time when your support matters most. Early‑season sales help farmers cover seed orders, soil amendments, and labor as they build toward the abundance of late spring and summer. Every bunch of kale, loaf of bread, or jar of honey you take home strengthens our local food system.

VENDOR SPOTLIGHT: SPICE PILGRIM
Spice Pilgrim brings a world of flavor to the market, one handcrafted blend at a time. Founded on the belief that spices are stories, each jar reflects a journey through global culinary traditions, thoughtfully adapted for home cooks who want both authenticity and ease.

Spice Pilgrim sources high‑quality whole spices and grinds them in small batches to preserve aroma, vibrancy, and depth. Their blends are layered, intentional, and rooted in cultural heritage. From warm, earthy masalas to bright Mediterranean mixes and bold chili-forward seasonings, every recipe is crafted to help cooks explore new flavors without intimidation, whether they’re seasoning vegetables, marinating proteins, or elevating a simple weeknight meal. Don’t forget to check out their amazing loose-leaf teas!

Find Dolly and Davinder this Saturday at the market. A reminder, Spice Pilgrim is not able to attend every market so make sure to stock up!
