Know Your Farmer market tour, and WIC is here!

By 11 July 2019

Twice a summer we announce that WIC is coming, and you may wonder what that means. Well it’s a supplemental nutrition program for Women, Infants, and Children (hence WIC) which provides federal grants to states for supplemental foods, health care referrals, and nutrition education for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk. It is provided first to participants with the most serious health conditions such as anemia (low blood levels), underweight, history of problems during pregnancy as often there is not enough funding for everyone who qualifies. On ‘WIC’ market days the County’s WIC office sets up tables to hand out checks to particiapnts who then spend them at the farmers booths on fresh healthy foods. It’s a marvellous way of introducing folks to OCFM who might not have visited any farmers markets to date. Plus it’s a bonus for our hard-working farmers!

This week is also the once-a-month Know Your Farmer Know Your Food market tour and cooking demo. Starting at the Info Booth at 9.30am the group is lead by nutritionist Kelly Streit , from OSU Extension. She’ll stop by Campfire Farm and Fisher Ridge Farm to learn about their farming practices and the beef and pork products. BBQ grill, anyone?  Along the way she’ll throw in stops at a couple produce vendors as you make your way to the Market Kitchen where Chef Deborah will demonstrate how to prepare Potato and Zucchini Salads using produce that is available at the market. Summer Sides, anyone?  Samples and recipes will be provided.  Information on Summer Food Safety will be available as well.  Do you know the safe grilling temperatures for beef, pork, or chicken?  How about how long it is safe to leave food sitting on the picnic table?  It’s a great way to start the market day and bring you closer to your farmers. (SNAP Card shoppers who take the tour, watch the demo can access an extra $5!).

All kinds of summer goodness is flowing into the market this week. Organic peaches again from Squirrely Jane’s Farm (plus fresh and lightly salted hazelnuts), delicious flavorful apricots from Profarm Orchards (and cherries), loads of cucumbers and summer squash (try a zucchini salad in the Market kitchen this week), salad mix, head lettuce, gorgeous new potatoes, cabbage, carrots, beets, broccoli, more tomatoes (including cherry tomatoes) eggplant, spicy ‘Thai Fire’ garlic (!) and more peppers. Marionberries are in as well as gooseberries, black and red currants, black berries, boysenberries…too much to mention!

Diana’s Delights has freshly made Apricot Jam from Profarm’s fruit this week. Delicious on her scones!

Pam’s Pickled Products is back this week with pickled asparagus, Mild and Spicy Beans, pickled garlic and onions, plus their zucchini relish. Kings Raven Winery is back too as is Vivacity Spirits and 503 Cocktalis in a Can. Stone Circle Cider and ForestEdge Vineyards round out the alcohol choices.
