Kick Off Labor Day Weekend at the Market

Welcome, September!

We are feeling cooler mornings and earlier sunsets as we make our gradual shift to fall, yet sweet ripe peaches, tomatoes and varieties of squash at the market are endless. Colorful peppers, juicy melon, sweet corn and cucumbers are still offering plenty of that summer sweetness.

If you’re thinking of grilling over the long weekend, both Campfire Farms and Martson Farm will be here with beef and pork plus grilling tips for a top-notch meal. Need a side dish? Add some pickled veggies from Pam’s Pickled Products for a zesty addition, smooth and creamy hummus with homemade pita chips from The Hummus Stop and fresh, juicy melons from Jose Lucas.

WIC (women, infants, children) will be at the market this Saturday to finish handing out the final distribution of Farm Direct Checks. Many have not picked them up! If you are a WIC client and have not received your produce checks, make sure you come to the market on Saturday.  As a reminder they expire on Nov 30th.
Once you have your checks, stop at our Information Booth to use your SNAP benefits and receive up to 20.00 in a produce match!

Whether you’re heading to the beach, working the weekend or staying at home, make sure the market is on your list. Now is a great time to support your local growers, food makers and artisans.

Mark your calendars for Nov 4th, 2023. We are moving to our new location at Clackamas Community College’s Green Lots (corner of Clairmont Drive and S Beavercreek Road) just 5 minutes away! We will keep our market customers informed as we move closer to the date and will provide easy-to-follow directions to eliminate difficulty in finding us.

Ring those bells! We’re in bell pepper season. Actually, ALL the peppers are in season currently showing off their brilliant colors, fragrant spice and crazy shapes.

Peppers are loaded with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, making them a nutrient rich food to add to your diet. Their heat can range from mild to spicy, depending on the variety of the pepper and the amount of capsicum (the chemical responsible for the heat) it contains.

Another benefit is the versatility of peppers. Not only are they inexpensive you can preserve them in a number of ways from roasting, freezing and even dehydrating them to enjoy all year long.

For the easiest method check out this simple freezing technique:

“Freezing peppers is a quick, simple, and no fuss way to preserve peppers from your garden. Simply cut your peppers in strips or dices and remove the seeds. Then place them in a freezer bag. Squeeze out as much air as possible or use a food saver or vacuum sealer to prevent freezer burn. Frozen peppers work great in most dishes- sautés, soups, on pizza, you name it.”

All of our farms are boasting beautiful displays of peppers so take your pick and load up your shopping totes!

With the start of school next week, it’s time to consider quick breakfasts that are both nutritious and easy for those busy mornings.

This Saturday our POP Club will be making their own instant oatmeal cups to take home. Kiddos will have the opportunity to follow a recipe that includes instant oats* and additions of choice, such as dried fruits and nuts* We will also send home the recipe so kids can recreate some on their own. This activity will be available while supplies last.

*Oats are Gluten Free from Bob’s Red Mill.
*This activity includes possible allergens, such as nuts.
