Here Comes the Sun (and the strawberries)

By 6 June 2024

When RJ’s farm van pulled into the market lot bright and early last Saturday, their truck was stacked to the brim with crates of freshly picked strawberries.

Varieties such as Crimsons, Ruby June’s, Sweet Sunrise and Mary’s Peak created a massive red landscape across their extended market tables. No surprise a few hours later, their tables were completely emptied! This goes to show not only are their berries delicious and sweet, but how ready we are for the season.

If you missed out, no worries. Plenty more are heading to market this week from RJ FarmsSouth Barlow BerriesFulton Family FarmsAlbeke Farms and Pheasant’s Eye. Stewards’s Valley will have some coveted Hoods along with Farm D’ICI boasting flavorful Albions.

The sun is back! What a great weekend to open up the grill. Campfire FarmsScratch Meats and Martson Farm all have the perfect sausages, steaks, burgers and more to get you started. Don’t forget to throw some fresh veggies alongside. Garlic scapes, spring zucchinis, and asparagus make great additions and are in season at the market.

We have a wonderful event for our market goers this Saturday, thanks to Oregon State University Extension’s Master Preservers so read on for the details!

Find us every Saturday from 9am-2pm at Clackamas Community College’s GREEN LOT 1 here in Oregon City. (off the intersection of S. Beavercreek Rd and Clairmont Drive)

See you at the market!

ATTENTION SNAP shoppers! Don’t forget the market offers Double Up Food Bucks, a produce matching program that provides up to 20.00 in free matching funds to buy fresh produce, veggie and herb plant starts and mushrooms.

Come to the Information Booth this Saturday so we can run your card to receive this wonderful extra benefit!

Join us for a BERRY fun morning this Saturday beginning at 9am!

The OSU Extension Service says, “Let’s get Cannin’ and Jammin!”  Visit our booth located next to the Information booth where Master Food Preserver volunteers can answer your questions on safe home canning methods to preserve your berries. New to canning? Want to learn the differences between pectin products used to make jam or jellies? Wonder why your jams and jellies will not set? We can provide some guidance and helpful resources to help set you up for success. “

OSU is also providing freezer jam pectin packets to POP Club kids. Nothing signals the beginning of summer better than berry freezer jam. Kids can also spin the “strawberry” wheel and answer a trivia question; Do you know how many seeds are contained on the outside of an average size strawberry, or how modern varieties of strawberries made it to Oregon? Spin the wheel to find out.
