Gluten-free Baking and Fave Farmer Day!

By 15 August 2019

Love Sunflowers? We have Sunflowers!

Join Mic’s Mix at the Market Kitchen this week, they are back for their once-a-month visit.  You will learn how to use fresh berries to make amazing gluten-free berry bars. This is a delicious on-the-go treat that is easy to make and pack up ahead of time or freeze for later. Bring these bars to any family event, pack them into your kids’ lunches, or eat them for breakfast. Mic’s Mix gluten-free flours are made under the strictess conditions for those with a gluten intolerance or who are celiac, or just want to change it up now and again and get off wheat for a bit.  With a heaping serving of whole grains, you can adapt these bars with fresh or frozen berries so you can make them in the winter too.

Mary from Meridian Organic Orchards brings her Organic value-added products, raw nuts and tree fruits to the market under the Squirrelly Jane banner!

It’s a full market on Saturday , 71 canopies are going up! Sometimes a customer will come up and say ‘what a nice little market this is!” and I want to say ‘wait, what, we are little?’! You may just head to the farmers booths for all that gorgeous produce and tasty pastured meat, but here’s hoping you take the time to investigate the value-added vendors too. A ‘value-added’ product is one that originates on a farm but it’s raw form is then changed into a different product. One such vendor is Squirrelly Jane. Mary started her business at our market with the idea of taking her raw hazelnuts (which she also sells) and adding value by producing nut butters, plain and (heavenly) chocolate, as well as roasting and lightly salting nuts too. She together with her husband and two children (yes her 9 year old helps a lot!) run the family’s 80 acre certified Organic hazelnut and fruit orchard in Aurora. The farm has a state of the art processing building housing their kitchen on the farm, which is run solely on solar power, yes they are sustainable too!

Mary picking her Organic Veteran Peaches (available this Saturday)

Mary’s father inherited the orchards from his father and turned all the growing practices organic in the 70s, getting offical certification in the 90s! He was adamant that chemicals had no place in the soil, on the fruit and nuts or in our bodies. Mary’s family took over running the orchards from him about 10 years ago. By buying from Squirrelly Jane you are not only supporting a small family farm, but one that looks after the soil and the health of the ecosystems… and you know you are getting a clean wholesome product too.   https://squirrellyjane.com/

Gorgeous cherry tomatoes from Brown Bottle Farm.

The farmers have peppers coming in now as well as corn and all the tomatoes. Padrons and Shishitos are the small frying peppers, good for appetizers with course salt, but we now have Czech Black peppers, Pimento sweets, Problanos, green Bell peppers and Sun Love Farm will have Jimmy Nardellos. These look a lot like a hot cayenne but are sweet, flavorful with no spicyness, a favorite sweet frying pepper. Sun Love Farm also will have a massive quantity of tomatoes, with bulk deals ($2/lb if you get 10lbs or more).

Art from RJ Farms has often been the ‘Fave the Farmer!

Kids will get to make a button for themselves and one to give to their favorite farmer. At the end of the day the farmer who has the most buttons is crowned (literally) Fave Farmer in the Market! Always a fun day!

Corn is back in the Market. Find it at Leone’s Farm, RJ Farm and Parson’s Farms.

Yes Please Indian food is back from Europe. Back to is Oomph Cooking Blends, Ole World Camelina Oil, Pam’s Pickled Products, Still Weather Spirits, DT Pottery, Clean Slate Suds, Madd Sass (soaps and lotions) and Trails Distilling. Out is Market Pasta, back next week. Next week is our Kraut Workshop given by NW Ferments. This is hands-on, with limited space. Starting around 10.30am….and you get to take home a jar of kraut to ferment!

We are lucky to have found Healthy Roots Hemp Products early, before the CBD market exploded. Her family farm in Eastern Oregon grows the Hemp and every product has stringent third party testing.

This week the amazing Tiffany Carlson is in the music booth. She played for us the first year we opened in 2005 and has been back each summer ever since. However we only get her once a year now as she is so busy. You may not be familiar with her acoustic folk-style, but you are guaranteed to love her music! A professional singer/songwriter with 4 albums under her belt , she is always well received at the Market and we are lucky to have her back.

Don’t be faced with this board at Fisher Ridge Farm, get to market early!

Bring your bags, your coolers, go home with a new product and inspiration for different meals. Enjoy the morning at the Market and support the local farmers!
