Our farmers have a wide array of sweet and juicy melons this week. Here’s some quick info on the different varieties available this Saturday. While the traditional Hermiston watermelons are a fan favorite, Oregon growers have discovered many other varieties that grow well in our Western Oregon climate.
Charentais: A French Heirloom melon with a high sugar content, creating a very sweet flavor with a soft floral aftertaste. Charentais melons are often referred as the most flavorful melon in the world! Find them at Farm D’ICI.
Sugar Baby Watermelons: A small to medium size watermelon, Sugar Babies are known for juicy flavor and a tender, crisp consistency. They’re dark and dense while possessing a smooth glossy finish and semi thick rind. Find these at RJ Farms.
Yellow Watermelon: Originating in Africa over 5,000 years ago, this melon offers a sweet, honey-like taste coupled with hints of apricot. Available in both seeded and seedless, yellow watermelons tend to be a bit sweeter than its pink counterpart. Find them at Stewards Valley Farm, Wild Roots Farm and Jose Ignacio’s Melons.
Cantaloupe: Many melons fall into this Muskmelon Group. Some have a thicker webbed exterior while others are thinner such as a Galia or Sharlyn. Refreshing and sweet, cantaloupes offer a hint of tropical flavor. Picked too soon, the melon loses out on the last push of summery flavor. Find them at RJ Farms, Wild Roots Farm, Stewards Valley Farm, Farrah Farms, Sun Love Farm and Jose Ignacio’s Melons.
Canary: Offering a distinct sweet flavor, Canary melons tend to be slightly tangier. The flesh looks similar to a pear but is softer. The name comes from its bright yellow color, resembling that of a canary bird!
Find them at Stewards Valley Farm and Farm D’ICI
Crenshaw: A type of cantaloupe melon known for sweet flavor, floral scents and a velvety texture. Crenshaws often possess a salmon-colored flesh with a tender bite. You can find these melons at a variety of our farms.
