Celebrate Melon Season!

By 29 August 2024

Celebrate the long weekend with a trip to the market!

This week the market is boasting sweet and flavorful melons. As they’re in peak season the varieties are endless, and our farmers are more than happy to let you sample. The folks of Empowered Flowers and Stewards Valley Farm have teamed up to offer some unique and delicious varieties. To quote a happy customer shopping their booth, “This melon tastes like the ones my grandmother used to grow”. There is no better compliment.

Labor Day weekend is here, and most aren’t ready for the shorter days and cooler nights. While the seasons are changing, the Oregon food landscape remains abundant as plants and trees become heavy with the weight of its bounty. It’s another great reminder to shop and support our local growers.

Send off summer with a weekend BBQ. You will find Martson Farm with Scottish Highland Beef and Campfire Farms boasting an array of cuts perfect for the grill. With prolific veggies from all of our farms there is plenty of variety for a savory veg forward meal as well.

Find us this Saturday from 9am-2pm on the campus of Clackamas Community College’s GREEN LOT 1.
(off the corner of S Beavercreek Road and Clairmont Dr) here in Oregon City.
Customer parking can be found in Green Lot 2, Brown Lot, Douglas Loop and Blue Lots 1 and 2.

See you at the market!

Our farmers have a wide array of sweet and juicy melons this week. Here’s some quick info on the different varieties available this Saturday. While the traditional Hermiston watermelons are a fan favorite, Oregon growers have discovered many other varieties that grow well in our Western Oregon climate.

Charentais: A French Heirloom melon with a high sugar content, creating a very sweet flavor with a soft floral aftertaste. Charentais melons are often referred as the most flavorful melon in the world! Find them at Farm D’ICI.

Sugar Baby Watermelons: A small to medium size watermelon, Sugar Babies are known for juicy flavor and a tender, crisp consistency. They’re dark and dense while possessing a smooth glossy finish and semi thick rind. Find these at RJ Farms.

Yellow Watermelon: Originating in Africa over 5,000 years ago, this melon offers a sweet, honey-like taste coupled with hints of apricot. Available in both seeded and seedless, yellow watermelons tend to be a bit sweeter than its pink counterpart. Find them at Stewards Valley Farm, Wild Roots Farm and Jose Ignacio’s Melons.

Cantaloupe: Many melons fall into this Muskmelon Group. Some have a thicker webbed exterior while others are thinner such as a Galia or Sharlyn. Refreshing and sweet, cantaloupes offer a hint of tropical flavor. Picked too soon, the melon loses out on the last push of summery flavor. Find them at RJ FarmsWild Roots FarmStewards Valley FarmFarrah Farms, Sun Love Farm and Jose Ignacio’s Melons.

Canary: Offering a distinct sweet flavor, Canary melons tend to be slightly tangier. The flesh looks similar to a pear but is softer. The name comes from its bright yellow color, resembling that of a canary bird!
Find them at Stewards Valley Farm and Farm D’ICI

Crenshaw: A type of cantaloupe melon known for sweet flavor, floral scents and a velvety texture. Crenshaws often possess a salmon-colored flesh with a tender bite. You can find these melons at a variety of our farms.

Not sure which one to pick? Your farmer has all the tips and tricks to help you find the perfect melon. Plan on taking home a few varieties on Saturday.
