A fresh New Year at the Market!

IMG_3224Get your Fresh On at the New Years Market this Saturday Jan. 5th! We’ll be set up on 8th St at Main from 10am-2pm every first and third Sat. of the month through April! Healthy local foods and tons of it. Rick Steffens Farms, RJ Farms and Family Table Farms will have just-dug and just-picked freshness for you. Crisp root veggies include turnips (great sliced thin in salads as well as roasted) , beets (both golden and red) rutabagas, parsnips (wonderful mashed either together with pots. or by themselves) potatoes, onions and shallots….carrots coming soon, stay posted. Greens include Italian kale (for a different salad chop it really fine with a little onion , fresh orange and toasted walnuts), Swiss chard, spinach, (possibly a little lettuce) and winter squash…Acorn, Delicata, Spaghetti, Sweet Dumpling etc. Art from RJ Farms still has a very few peppers and tomatoes.. get there early:)
Plus bunches of those striking pepper berries!

IMG_2360Sweet Home Farms are featuring Boneless Pork Loin chops Saturday, 20% off,  two in a pkg and 1” thick. Easy and delicious to prepare…(super grilled with a little of Diana’s Delights Orange Marmalade)  Try them this week, then order yourself a whole or half hog next week to save some $!  They will have Bulk Pork available all month!!(Supplies are limited, next Bulk pork won’t be available until July) They are also bringing whole Chickens that include the wonderful livers! Roast the chicken with some root veggies and use the livers chopped up fine in a Spaghetti Bolognese sauce for later in the week..add a splash of red wine for a really rich ragu.

IMG_3136The Market is flush with eggs again! The sunny weather has helped tremendously. RJ Farms will have several dozen and Sweet Home Farms should have about 20 doz. hens eggs. Boondockers have (finally) got some delicious and nutritious DUCK EGGS…great for baking too!

And speaking of eggs…….Bigfoot Bread now has Egg Braided Bread…looks and tastes wonderful and granola, plus all the usual freshly baked products from just down the street at the Bakery! La Provence will have their crusty bread ..and pastries as well. Use the bones of the roasted chicken and make soup with the left-overs, serve with Portland Creamery’s chevre and crusty bread….slices of crisp apples from Kiyokawa Orchards to follow for an easy , quick dinner. Green Card Salsa will have the full selection again (they sold out last Market of most )…their cranberry/habanero is just heaven with slices of avocado! The Hummus Stop will have all their salads and freshly made hummus and pita chips…and Robin from Wild Oregon has just checked in to say she will be bringing the first of this seasons Oregon Crab (at a “great price” ), Butterfish=Black Cod, Channel and Yellow Mouth Rock Fish, Steamer Clams and “organically” raised Steelhead.

IMG_3096New to the Market this Saturday is Nuttopia ….roasted on site hazelnuts and almonds… Cajon Almonds, Coconut almonds, Cinnamon Almonds and Hazelnuts…and Orange Hazelnuts..stop by and give ’em a try and an OC welcome!

Aunt Tammy is back with her healthy Dog Treats..this weeks flavors include Molasses Gingersnaps, Peanut Butter Hearts & Banana Biscotti!!!..remember these are for the dogs:) Hard I know.

The Downtown OC Winter Farmers Market opens Saturday Nov. 3rd!!!!

Mickleberry Gardens Honey and Honey Remedies will be back next market (Jan. 19th)…as will Blossom Vinegars and He Sells These Shells.

Mitzil Restaurant (full menu at their location up on 7th St) will have Tamales, Rice, Beans and Empanadas and Savory et Sweet will have the following menu: One of Chris’ best selling soups makes it’s first appearance at OCFM and~ Thai Turkey Coconut served with La Provence Cranberry Walnut bread. It uses Oregon roasted turkey & broth. Available frozen soup is Chicken Arugula. The crepes specials are: Egg, Bacon, Asparagus with Tillamook sharp white cheddar; Chicken Pot Pie (crepe) with  creamy alfredo sauce, white wine & thyme; Brie Pear with optional smoked Ham and the rest of the regular menu. Bailey’s Haute Fudge crepe returns to the sweet crepe list!! Wine by the glass or bottle from Kings Raven Winery…don’t forget our neighbors across the road, The Caufield House will have a nice warm cafe and full breakfast for you too!

Pop-club-with-purple-(3)Bring the kids to Market! The  P.O.P. (Power Of Produce) Club is still going strong ! Thanks to the challenge grant offered to us by Clackamas County Soil and Water District and the many customers, businesses and farmers who helped us match it…we can now carry the club forward into the summer…yea! Kids (ages 5-12) can register and receive a shopping bag, button and $2 EVERY time they shop at the OC Market to spend on fresh fruits and veggies…help us spread the word, let’s encourage our kids to eat fresh and healthy this year!

Thanks to the OC Rotary Club Foundation we are offering a $5 match for Oregon Trail dollars spent at the Market….$5 of free food! Come and see us at the Info. Booth 🙂

The market accepts cash, debit, EBT (SNAP) and P-EBT cards. WIC and Senior Farm Direct checks are accepted by all produce vendors and expire on Nov 30th each year. Stop by our information booth for information.
