It’s August and seasonal produce is coming fast and furious.

We’re at that stage of summer where we can’t keep up with all the newly ripened fruits and vegetables. It’s the time of year where folks are bringing extra totes and wagons to carry all their seasonal treasures.

It reminds us how grateful we are to be supported by such an amazing community who believe in purchasing locally grown food from our small farms and businesses. Did you know the majority of our farms grow within Clackamas County and travel less than 10 miles to our market?

This week stone fruits are taking front and center, in addition to loads of corn! RJ Farms is picking their first harvest on Friday for Saturday’s market! RJ’s corn is hugely popular thanks to its sweet flavor and snappy texture.

This week our newsletter includes details on peach varieties currently in season, plus a vendor highlight on Martson Farm! Make sure to also check who is in attendance this week.

Aug 4th marks the beginning of National Farmers Market Week, and we have some fun plans in the making for our Aug 10th market! Stay tuned for details.

Find us every Saturday 9am-2pm at Clackamas Community College’s GREEN LOT 1 here in Oregon City (off the corner of S Beavercreek Rd and Clairmont Drive).

Customer Parking and Access: Green Lot 2, Brown Lot, Blue Lots 1 & 2, Douglas Loop and Tri Met Bus Line 32

See you at the market!

There are plenty of peach varieties in Oregon. Some include donut peaches (pictured above) which have a flattened appearance and a white flesh. They’re a delicious snacking peach but not a preserving peach due to their higher pH level.Oregon varieties fall into two general types: freestone (flesh readily separates from the pit) and clingstone (flesh clings tightly to the pit). Most people prefer to preserve freestone varieties because they’re much easier to prepare, especially when prepping for pies, desserts and other dishes.

Good varieties for canning include Veteran, Early Elberta, Elberta, Rochester, Hale, Alamar, Red Globe, Red Haven, and Sun Crest.

Now is the time to bulk buy Oregon peaches! The season is fast and furious. Thanks to OSU Extension, we have wonderful resources and recipes for preserving. Check out their link for more helpful information and plan on shopping from our produce farms this Saturday. Preserving Peaches (SP 50-444) | OSU Extension Service (oregonstate.edu)

This week you can find peaches from Albeke Farms, Fulton Family Farms, Pheasant’s Eye Farm, RJ Farms and Squirrelly Jane’s.

VENDOR HIGHLIGHT: Martson Farm

Rick Martson is a full-time Scottish Highland Cattle farmer and meat seller in Molalla, Oregon. A now retired trial attorney, Rick first discovered the beauty of the Highland breed while traveling and attending school in Scotland.

Martson Farm raises their herd of Scottish Highland Cattle naturally, just as they have been raised over the centuries in Scotland – exclusively on grass, brush, and hay.  This allows them to develop the lean, naturally tender and flavorful meat the breed is famous for.

“We never use sub therapeutic antibiotics or hormones on our herd. If you are looking for a wholesome, delicious alternative to commodity beef sold in grocery stores, we offer our grass fed/grass finished meat in a variety of ways. And we deliver for free within 50 miles of the farm.”

Nutritional Benefits: Due to the traditional raising methods of Highland Cattle, this grass-fed beef is more nutrient rich and healthier than typical commercial beef and other meats.

Highland Cattle History: Highland cattle are the oldest registered breed in the world. Hailing from the rich heritage of Scotland, their history is steeped in time honored traditions.

Martson Farm also offers a unique CSA (community supported agriculture) share, offering options to work with household’s budgets. Click their link here for all the details, pricing and how to get started as a subscriber CSA l Grass Fed Beef l Portland, Oregon (martsonfarm.com)
