Organic Freestone Peaches….and new vendors!

By 16 August 2018

     It’s cooler this weekend…get canning!

Well the news is that this Saturday we’ll have Organic Red Haven Peaches (same price as their regular peaches) from Kiyokawa Orchards. These are FREESTONE peaches, so perfect for canning! Plus they’ll have the first Starkcrimson pears, and more nectarines and apples too! We are entering the best time of the season for local produce. Late August through October is considered to be the harvest time….but it’s earlier this year. Peppers, tomatoes, corn, peaches, melons (Parsons Farms has some little watermelons with yellow flesh and black seeds), summer cabbage, eggplant, herbs, squash all the wonderful delights of summer are in the market now.  Coyote Ridge Farm (Certified Naturally Grown right here in OC) is taking over the Market Kitchen and cooking a Caper and Eggplant Tapenade! Come by the kitchen, watch it being made and take a recipe. Coming from the coast with Wild Oregon Seafood is fresh Ling Cod, Skate Wings (ask Robin how to prepare) Rock Fish, Halibut, Steelhead and Chinook Salmon, plus Shrimp and Crab for your menus this week!

This week we welcome the Portland Ashwagandha Farm, who make a Spagyric tincture of Ashwagandha from the fresh plants they grow, using both the roots and a small amount of fresh leaf. They grow biodynamically, and everything is processed fresh by hand. They also have a Hero’s Blend, a mixture of Ashwagandha, Red Belted Polypore, Japanese Knotweed, Devil’s Club, Passionflower, Yarrow, and Rose. Interested? Just read up on the properties and benefits of Ashwagandha …and you might well be!  The Grate Plate (with us last summer) is back for a few short weeks so don’t delay if you want some of their plates…it’s never too early to start thinking about the Holidays! They make cute decorative ceramic grating plates used to grate garlic, ginger, peppers, hard cheeses, nutmeg, chocolate and more. Back is 2 Towns Cider Co. , Market Pasta, NW Ferments, BBNW Candles. Gone is Spice Pilgrim, Delice Bakery and Culture Aromatics.

In our attempt to make our market more sustainable, we now have (again) receptacles for cans and bottles both at the main entrance and by the dining area, please use them, they benefit our programs when we take the bags to the bottle Drop.  New to the Market is Opportunity Earth with eco-friendly beeswax food wraps made from local beeswax and fun fabric. Use them to cover bowls in the fridge, over and over again! The Master Gardeners fabric produce bags are back in stock too…..but going fast again. Find them hanging on a clothes line up at the Info Booth. Suggested donation, $1 each.

Coyote Ridge Farm will be using their beautiful eggplant in the tapenade this week. Stop by the market kitchen and get a taste and a recipe!

New this week….a 50/50 (Split the Bucks!) Raffle is happening all day! The prize will be Oregon City Farmers Market $5 tokens you can spend just like cash with any vendor at the Market. The total value of the prize will be one-half of the proceeds from all the ticket sales on Saturday. Market tokens never expire, yay! Buy your raffle tickets from one of our volunteers at the market entrance booth. Tickets cost $1 each or six for $5. The drawing will be held at 1:45 p.m. at the market’s Information Booth. You do not need to be present to win. If you win, we will call you! The winner’s first name will be announced here and on the market’s Instagram and Facebook page too. If you think this is fun….raffle dates in future months will be announced. Thank you for being our customer and for your support!

Winner of the POP Club kids Favorite Farmer Day last week was RJ Farms. Accepting the honor was Maddie and Emily. These sisters not only sold the produce at the market this summer but also worked hard on the farm. They are back to college soon, this is their last week….stop by and congratulate them:)

We are currently fundraising to keep our educational programs going. I’m sure you all know about our Kids Power Of Produce (POP) Club which teaches kids about healthy nutrition (it’s now a national program in market’s across the US!), but we also have the ‘Know Your Farmers Know Your Food’ market tours and cooking demos (they take place every second Saturday of the month and all are welcome!) , our SNAP To It! program (read about it here: https://pamplinmedia.com/cr/24-news/402128-297600-oregon-city-farmers-market-offers-tours-recipe-demos or search U tube for the SNAP TO It! video) and not forgetting our weekely chef’s demos, where you can learn to cook in-season local, healthy produce! All this takes a lot of funding, and we have been offered a generous Matching Grant of $1000. If we can raise $1000 by the end of September, we will have $2000!!! You can donate at our Information Booth or send a check to: PO Box 2931, OC 97045. There’s even a Donate Button on our web site to make it easy and all donations are tax-deductible. https://orcityfarmersmarket.com/support-your-market/

We were all shocked and saddened this week to hear of the fatal accident of one of our (new this summer) vendors and her partner. Kelli of Kelli’s Kookies Dog Treats (Oregon City) was welcomed into the market in May. She will be missed by us and her customers. Our deepest sympathy to her family.
