In an era when local, organic food, and sustainability are on the tip of everyone’s tongues you can come to the Oregon City Farmers Market Saturday (June 20th) and learn to be more self-reliant in your home and garden this summer. You don’t have to own a farm to be an urban householder! The 3rd Annual Householding Fair will have all kinds of information, groups, farms and non-profits with information on becoming more resilient in your city lot.
The Master Food Preservers will give advice on home canning summer produce, it’s not that difficult and you save money, eat healthier and have fun! Meet Independence Gardens (if you are ready to grow food..they are ready to help you!) and find out how they work with households and organizations in the metro area interested in growing food by building edible garden infrastructure, coaching, consulting and maintaining! OSU Extension Master Gardeners will give a talk at 10am on growing “Food not Lawns”. Watering your lawns already? Use that land (and water) to grow food instead! These 30-40 min. talks run till the end of July, pick up a schedule of topics at the Info Booth. The Market Kitchen hosts a cooking demo at 11am (every Saturday through October) using market foods prepared simply. Chef Amy is cooking this week….get some fresh ideas for meals this summer! Learn about harvesting rain-water from the experts at Clackamas County’s Soil and Water Conservation District and about green cleaners and composting from Clackamas County’s Office of Sustainability. Pet the live baby goats and find out what it takes to keep back-yard chickens…plus you can pick up you starter flock as young hens will be for sale too. There is nothing like your own fresh eggs!
The kids can join the free Markets POP (Power Of Produce) Club and get $2 to buy fresh produce, they can also watch yarn spun into wool, dip candles in bees wax and grind wheat berries on a stationary bike and eat pancakes make from their own ground wheat plus pet the baby goats and hug a chicken too.
