Fulfilling our Mission

By 27 December 2018

Cheap, processed food is often the only option for shoppers with the food stamp (or SNAP) card. But it doesn’t have to be. A lot of kids today don’t know what a fresh carrot pulled from the ground tastes like or where their food comes from, but we are changing that. Many adults are not sure what’s in season, how to cook the local produce and how to store it, but at the Market they find out.

What makes our market special (we hear this from numerous vendors and shoppers) are the programs we offer. The kids Power Of Produce (POP) Club gives each child (5-12 yrs) $2 every market day in wooden tokens to buy fresh produce. This works so well at getting the kids to eat more produce that many other markets across the US have adopted our program. The Double Up Food Bucks program matches up to $6 in market coupons when food stamp shoppers each market day buy $6 in market tokens. The SNAP-To-It and Know Your Farmer Know Your Food programs offer customers (once a month) a guided tour of the Market with the OSU Extension dietitian. Farmers talk about their growing methods, their varieties and their animals. After the tour customers watch a cooking demo and take home a recipe and a whole lot more knowledge of our local seasonal foods. The Market Kitchen is open every summer market day, offering tasty samples, printed recipe sheets and ideas for healthy meals using market foods.

You may not know this, but all these programs are funded solely by grants and generous donors! If you have enjoyed any of these programs or seen them in progress at the Market please consider offering a donation yourself. The Market is a 501c3 non-profit and all donations are tax-deductible.

The market is more than a shopping place. Our mission is to create a space where farmers can sell directly to customers, but it’s also more. It’s a small business incubator, it’s where neighbors come together building a sense of belonging, and where customers of ALL ages and ALL income levels can learn about, taste and purchase healthy foods. Please join us in making a difference in our community!  We welcome checks at the Information Booth (Jan 5th is the next Market day), or mailed to OCFM, PO Box 2931, Oregon City 97045 or you can donate here on line:   https://orcityfarmersmarket.com/support-your-market/
