Real food right here !

Out of town at the weekend? Don’t miss out on REAL food for the family…we always have a good selection at our smaller Wednesday Market! High summer means all the goodies we’ve been waiting for are now arriving on the farmers trucks. Berries for cobblers, shortcakes or ice-cream…Cherries for pies, clafloutis and preserves…Peaches for grilling (yes they are heaven on the BBQ with honey drizzled over!)…..or just bite into one and don’t bother to catch the juice dripping down your arm…hey….it’s  summer!

Salad tomatoes, cherry tomatoes,  (seedless tomatoes from Leone’s Farm too!). Hungarian wax peppers , lettuce mix, basil, cucumber for pickles,  green cherry peppers, even the early Gravenstein APPLES will be coming this Wednesday…from Albeke Farms (you can U-Pick them at the farm!) Great for pies (try them with blackberries …lovely mix of flavors!) or applesauce..which you can then freeze.

I think all the produce vendors have summer squash so a quick recommendation (thank you White Star Farm..who have real tasty ones!) is to toss them on the grill or kebab them with onions and cherry tomatoes for the grill.  Below is the recipe for fritters from last summers cooking demo:

ZUCCHINI FRITTERS: 2 medium zucchini coarsely shredded, 2 garlic cloves and  1 small onion both thinly sliced, 2 eggs, 1 tsp salt and 1 tsp pepper, ¾ cup flour, ¼ cup Parmesan or Ricotta cheese …(or feta or chevre!)…..olive oil for frying.

In large bowl, combine zucchini, garlic, onion, cheese, eggs and 1 tsp. each of salt and pepper. Stir well, stir in flour until just incorporated.

Line a large baking sheet with paper towels. In large skillet, heat ¼ inch of olive oil until it shimmers. Working in batches, add 2-Tablespoon mounds of the zucchini batter to the hot oil, spreading them to form 3-inch fritters. Fry over moderately high heat, turning once, until browned and crisp – about 3 minutes. Drain on towel and serve.

Shy Ann Meats will bring more Rosemary bacon this week, this new product sold out last Wednesday!…Phil is now in the rosemary-growing business too (!)..as “fresh is the best for the bacon”…in addition they will  have their sausages and cured pork products .

Wild Nature’s Harvest will have more delicious mushrooms (with samples for you to try!), dried mushroom seasonings,  honey, jams  (from wild berries) plus nettle tea (a good natural anti-inflammatory)…plus whatever wild berries Bill has collected this week..possibly huckleberries!

Aunt Tammy’s Treats ( for your pooch) will be there with Peanut Butter Hearts, Molasses Snaps & Banana Biscotti. She sold out of the Molasses Snaps last time, so she’s made extra for this Market! Tammy will also have pound bags for those who want to buy a larger size and they’ ve created a “Mixed” bag for those who want a variety …and she always has a cold bowl of water out for dogs. Plus….we’ll have Fresh cut flowers from C&K Flower Farms, Hummus, Salads and Pita from The Hummus Stop. La Provence Bakery will be back next Wednesday (find them also at the Saturday Market with Big Bread too!)

The Fresh Start Cart will have fresh fruit smoothies for you and entertaining us will be Daniel Cecil…local musician , acoustic singer/songwriter playing folk …lovely music to relax too with a glass of wine from Kings Raven Winery…and playing at the Winery this Friday evening are the Beckerheads …gates open at 6pm, music at 7pm…gorgeous spot for the family!

This coming Saturday  Market (50 vendors)  2051, Kaen Rd off Beavercreek Rd (9am-2pm) will have Market Chef Amy cooking to inspire you ..with samples…plus some of the best foot-stomping music by the How Long Jug Band (you’re gonna luv ‘em!) playing 10-1pm…. AND  POP Club Kids …it’s “Who’s Your Favorite Farmer Saturday” !!!   Make 2  buttons..one for yourself and one to pin your fave farmer…let’s see which farm wins!!!
