Summer Time….and the shopping is easy!

One word that reflects the Market this Saturday…bountiful! So…what can you find ? Here’s just an idea: From 12 produce farms we’ll have hot house heirloom tomatoes, sungold cherry tomatoes, and the first field tomatoes! This season’s first dug garlic, shallots, sweet onions, peppers (including those cute little Padron Peppers we were sampling last week!) Cucumbers..all kinds, zucchini, yellow squash, green beans, beets, broccoli, bok choy, cauliflower, the first cone-head cabbage, peas (shelling and sugar pod) carrots, lettuce, spinach…and much more!

Fruit-wise from 11 farms we’ll have strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, gooseberries, bosyenberries, cherries, rhubarb, peaches, nectarines, apricots, pluots (cross between apricots and plums)…super flavorful and yellow Shiro plums.

2 Farms are bringing delicious local, humanely-raised meats including pork , lamb, beef, goat and  chicken. From Sweet Home Farms this will be your last chance to buy steaks (including boneless rib-eye) at $13 per lb.!! Hansen Family Farms will have plenty of ground beef for those burgers and ground pork, sausages and garlic sausages too…as well as other meats and cuts….and farm fresh eggs.

Wild Oregon will have ..fresh from the coast…Sardines, Chinook Salmon, Albercore tuna and crawdads…at least, may be more!  Robin will also have her marinated anchovies and crab spread too….when you’re purchasing fish stop and think about local fishing fleets, (especially the Albercore fishermen …their boats are relatively small) as this summer, apart from the usual hazards they are now deeply concerned about tsunami debris as well!

Other Market news: Looking for a really nice seasoning for the BBQ? Well along with a final week of fresh cut lavender, Victoria’s Lavender will be introducing a new culinary product this week. ……organic “Herbs de Provence”, great for summer grilling!

Stop by the Tippen Tea co. they will be sampling iced teas…made locally from local ingrediants and so refreshing on a hot day.

Need to spruce up your garden and add some dramatic color? Three Brothers Nursery will have 4-5′ Cannas on sale this Saturday—2 large plants for $14.00. And don’t forget your gardening tools and kitchen knives for Sir Sharp-A-Lot…he’ll be waiting!

Daisy Fed Soaps and Lotions has restocked their Orange Bergamot Soap and will have plenty for everyone who has been asking for it.  In spite of the heat, they  will have their exceptional Whipped Body Butter … keeping it on ice!  The samples will be out make sure you try them out!

Happenings: From 10.30-11.30 Providence Willamette Falls Hospital chefs will be preparing easy-to-make and healthy…..Gazpacho …and they will make a lot of samples for you!!! And…. Care Oregon and Laura Huckaba will be demonstrating how easy it is to grow food in ordinary household containers. ..So instead of recycling them…grow food in them! Take one home already planted!

Pictured here is Padraic who has just purchased (last Sat.) his very own fig tree with the POP Tokens he saved! So this week POP Club kids ……..The Oregon City Lions Club are taking over the POP Club Fun Booth. Their Lions Strides program is designed to promote walking, exercise, and a greater awareness about the prevention of Type 2 juvenile diabetes. The Lions will lead Stride walks on the hour at 10:00am, 11:00am, 12:00pm, and 1:00pm. Over 100 children have already  registered to be part of the Strides program. Those active members should bring his or her Strides tracking form to the Farmers Market in order to participate in the Strides contest which is taking place during the Summer Farmers market. The Strides tracking form is used to record each day the child completes at least a 30 minute walk. Each 30 minute walk earns a ticket for a drawing which will occur on the last day of the Summer Farmers Market. The prizes will be activity-oriented and will include such items as a bicycle, skateboard, in-line skates, razor, and Wii Fitness system.

Tamales and Crepes, coffee and smoothies (sadly no ice-cream..they are still fixing the truck!)…but wine by the glass from Kings Raven Winery and cool tunes from The Petite Beat..a new band to the Market…let’s show ‘em a warm welcome…from 10am-1pm.
