I enjoy attending the farmers market. Two weeks ago I was there between 11 – noon, looking for some good produce. I was saddened to see a lot of good greens (chard, kale, collards) that were quite wilted. I’m sure they were picked that morning or the night before, but being wilted makes me think half of the nutrition is gone.
I’d love to see veggies such as leafy greens treated like we treat flowers. Look at how flowers are sold — in buckets with some water so they stay fresh and “alive”, as no one wants to buy wilted flowers. Yet that’s what we accept when it comes to our nourishment?
I wonder if it would be possible for leafy greens vendors to keep their produce fresh. Perhaps, rather then laying them horizontally in a box, stack them vertically in plastic-wrapped boxes with a bit of water at the bottom to keep them crisp and nutritious.
Thanks for considering.
Hi point taken, we have a really early crowd that shops and the greens were looking good at the beginning! I’m sure as the season progresses the vendors will sharpen their displays and as it gets hotter, they will think to have them in water!
Thanks for the feed back …try us again:) PS: You can always find me in the Market if you want to point something out like that , then I can make it known to the vendor there and then. My name is Jackie, and the Info. Booth volunteers can find me. Cheers!
